Dr. Eric C. Kauffman is the New York Representative on the Northeastern Section Board of Directors and on faculty at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York. Dr. Kauffman was recently awarded a highly competitive grant called an Idea Award from the Department of Defense, Kidney Cancer Research Program.
The grant is titled "Characterization of a Novel Critical Interplay Between VHL Inactivation and Iron Metabolism in Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma Tumorigenesis,” and investigates the relation between iron accumulation and clear cell renal cell tumorigenesis in human and mouse tissues.
Additionally, the AUA awarded Dr. Kauffman the first place award for Best Video in the Prostate Cancer Video Session for his video abstract titled “Extended Prostatic Urethral Preservation (EPUP) during Robotic Radical Prostatectomy: Technique and Update on Functional and Oncologic Outcomes."
With the novel technique that he himself developed, the intraprostatic urethra is dissected out of the prostate and preserved in its entirety or in part during radical prostatectomy. Dr. Kauffman's study suggests rapid postoperative continence recovery and early oncologic safety with this technique.
