Dr. Willie Underwood was elected to the AMA Board of Trustees on June 11, 2019 In June, Dr. Willie Underwood was elected to the American Medical Association (AMA) Board of Trustees. Dr. Underwood is the first urologist on the Board of Trustees since Dr. Frank Jirka, a Chicago urologist, served as its president from 1983 – 1984.

Dr. Underwood is a member of the Northeastern Section who works in Buffalo, NY. He has represented the AUA as a delegate to the AMA House of Delegates for many years and is a long-standing advocate for issues affecting urologists and their patients.

“I ran for the AMA Board because I believe in the African proverb, ’if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together,’” Dr. Underwood said. “I am hopeful that other urologists will join the AMA and work with me and your delegates to the AMA so that we can go together with the House of Medicine to improve the lives of physicians and the patients that we serve.”

The AUA, together with seven other groups including the American College of Surgeons, endorsed Dr. Underwood’s campaign.

“I’ve had the honor and pleasure of serving in the House of Delegates with Willie for nearly a decade. Since his early career as a resident, he has been an effective advocate for the concerns of urologists throughout this nation and he has served as a leader in the AMA from chairing the resident and fellow section to his current position as chair of the Council on Legislation. His election to the Board of Trustees of the AMA is a reflection of his passion and commitment to advancing not only the practice of urology but the ability of all doctors to practice their best medicine while increasing access to all in our nation,” said lead AUA delegate Dr Aaron Spitz. “This is an exciting time for urology and we look forward to collaborating with Dr. Underwood in his new role with the AMA.”

Dr. Underwood is helping to organize a NSAUA sponsored session at the AUA March 2020 Advocacy conference.
